The year 2022 is announced to be extraordinary in terms of film releases. Movies awaited by moviegoers have already begun to appear, such as the latest Scream from the famous horror franchise, Moonfall SF or Death on the Nile, with Hercule Poirot returning to solve a new mystery.
But 2022 promises other blockbusters that continue more recent franchises.
The list of appearances includes Top Gun: Maverick, The Batman, Avatar 2, Fantastic Beasts 3, Doctor Strange, Jurassic World: Dominion, Thor: Love and Thunder and many more. Here is a top 10 of the most anticipated productions by fans and film critics.
Spiderman: No Way Home Surpasses ‘Avatar’ in Box Office Earnings
Spiderman is climbing to new heights at the domestic box office. ‘No Way Home’ has reached $760 million in the U.S., making it the the third highest grossing movie domestically of all time. It replaced the spot formerly held by James Cameron’s 2009 ‘Avatar’.
But, the film is still behind ‘Avengers: Endgame and ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ for the top two spots.
1. The Batman
The third Batman in ten years. After two years of watching the streets of the city as Batman, bringing fear into the hearts of criminals, the most famous character in the DC universe is depicted in a completely different story, which reveals the hidden secrets of the founding families of Gotham. With only two trusted allies – Alfred Pennyworth and Lt. James Gordon – among the corrupt network of city officials and dignitaries, Batman stands out as the embodiment of revenge.
When a criminal named Riddler targets the city’s elite with a series of sadistic intrigues, the clues send Bruce Wayne on an investigation into the underworld, where he meets characters such as Catwoman, the Penguin / Oswald Cobblepot, Edward Nashton and Carmine Falcone. As the evidence begins to approach the house and the villain’s plans become clear, Batman must create new relationships to expose the culprit, becoming a symbol of hope in Gotham.
There has never been a bigger year for the Dark Knight in movie theaters. Not only will we get a brand-new version of the character played by Robert Pattinson in director Matt Reeves‘ upcoming film, The Batman, but we’re also set to see the return of Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck to the role in The Flash. Yes, that’s three Batmen across two movies, and one of them is already shooting yet another movie as the Caped Crusader.
2. Morbius
The movie from the Marvel universe tells the story of biochemist Michael Morbius who tries to find a cure for a rare blood disease, but ends up infecting himself with a form of vampirism. Jared Leto will be in the forefront of the action, and Michael Keaton will return as Adrian Toomes / Vulture, a role he also played in the 2017 Spiderman: Homecoming movie.
3. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore
I’m one of the most ardent fans of the Harry Potter magic universe, and I can’t wait to see April. This will be the first Fantastic Beasts film in which Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen will take on the role of Grindelwald from Johnny Depp, after Warner Bros. he asked her to drop him on charges of domestic abuse.
4. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Also Marvel, another movie expected. Dr. Stephen Strange uses a forbidden spell that opens the door to the multiverse and even to an alternate version of himself, and the threat posed by this event seems too great even for the combined powers of Strange, Wong and Wanda Maximoff.
5. Top Gun: Maverick
36 years after the original, this year we are looking forward to the Tom Cruise sequel. The famous actor resumes the role with which he made history and challenges his own experience as a pilot accumulated during the many stunts he performed alone. So Tom Cruise returns to the role of the dangerous Maverick pilot. He is joined by Miles Teller, who will play Goose’s son Jennifer Connelly as Cruise’s new romantic attraction and Jon Hamm and Glen Powell as uniformed “stallions”.
6. Jurassic World: Dominion
The sixth title in the Jurassic Park franchise will take place four years after the Fallen Kingdom story. Colin Trevorrow, the executive producer of Dominion, which directed Jurassic Worlddin 2015, says the other Jurassic Park movies “have mostly the same story.” It’s just that Dominion takes place around the world, in different environments: wilderness, cityscape, desert, snow.
We’ll see Owen Grady (played by Chris Pratt) and Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) in the movie, still trying to save the big beasts.
7. Thor: Love and Thunder
Continuation of Thor: Ragnarok and the fourth film in the Thor saga, will feature the Scandinavian god played by Chris Hemsworth and the Asgard warrior played by Tessa Thompson teaming up with Chris Pratt’s Guardians of the Galaxy to confront Gorr the Butcher of the Gods, a fierce antagonist played by the talented Christian Bale.
8. Mission: Impossible 7
The seventh film of the Mission Impossible franchise will see Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) running, jumping and traveling through Italy, Norway and the Eve Alps. We also see Luther (Ving Rhames), Benji (Simon Pegg), Ilsa (Rebecca Ferguson) and Alanna (Vanessa Kirby), while Hayley Atwell plays a mysterious new spy. Esai Morales will be the antagonist.
9. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
A sequel that will continue to explore the world of Wakanda and all the characters introduced in the 2018 film. Following the tragic death of actor Chadwick Boseman who lost his battle with cancer in late 2020, Marvel has decided not to give the role of T’Challa / Pantera Black to another actor.
10. Avatar 2
A few years after the battle with the Earthlings, the aliens on Pandora continue their lives in peace. Jake Sully lives happily in his new body with his girlfriend. However, the happiness of those on Pandora is about to be destroyed by a new threat.
North is the leader of a clan of unknown aliens who call themselves “Venusians”. They slowly begin to wreak havoc on Pandora, and Jake realizes that he needs to take action against the space beasts. An epic battle awaits the inhabitants of Pandora in which Jake will have to risk everything, maybe even his own life.
Unfortunately, this movie doesn’t have a trailer yet. But, 13 years after the commercial mega-success recorded by Avatar, it is worth waiting a little longer. Director James Cameron is finally coming up with a long-awaited sequel and has announced that he will be making Avatar 3, 4 and 5 in the coming years.
